Movko (the app) | Last updated: 10 October 2026
Movko helps you speak Portuguese in everyday situations. We built it to work without an account, and to collect as little as possible. This page says exactly what stays on your phone, what we send to our server, and what you can do about it.
Who we are
The controller of your data is Ihor Dzhevaha, a sole trader (empresário em nome individual) registered in Portugal (NIF 309834783), Apartado 3031, Leca da Palmeira, 4451-801, Portugal ("we", "our"). You can write to us at support@movko.app.
What stays on your phone
Your learning progress, the words you searched for, your settings, your reminder time and the phrases shown in the widget are stored on your phone. We do not receive them. If you leave iCloud sync on (see below), your progress is also kept in your own iCloud.
What we collect, and why
- Anonymous statistics. In the European Union and the EEA, the United Kingdom and Switzerland the app asks you when you first open it, and nothing is sent until you say yes. Everywhere else they are on by default, and you can turn them off at any time in Settings > Privacy and data. The app decides whether to ask from your phone's region and time zone settings; this check is made on your phone and its result is not sent to us. What is sent: a random identifier that the app makes for itself (it is not your advertising ID and is not linked to your Apple ID or name), the app version, and the language of the app and of the translations. We do not ask where you live and we do not send a country. With them, events such as "lesson finished", "paywall viewed", "trial started". Events carry no text you type or say. We use them to see where people get stuck and to decide what to improve and which course to build next. You can turn this off at any time in Settings > Privacy and data; the app then stops sending them.
- Progress sync through your iCloud. It is on by default and you can switch it off in Settings > iCloud. The state of your review cards, your answers by day, your active days, the situations you opened and your progress in the Numbers tab are stored in your private iCloud (CloudKit), in encrypted fields, so they appear on your other devices and survive a new phone. They go from your devices to Apple's iCloud and not to us: we never receive or see them. Your search history is not included.
- Feedback you send us (and an email address, only if you type one), the waiting list on our website (your email address, only to tell you when the app is released).
- Courses you are interested in, anonymously. When you tap a course marked "soon" (or type another language you want to learn), the app tells our server which course, and nothing else: no identifier, no device, no address is stored with it. We only count it, to decide which course to build next. It is sent once per course, whatever you chose about statistics.
- Purchases. Apple handles your payment; we never see your card. Apple sends our server notifications about subscriptions (product, dates, status, price and currency) so that we can count trials and paying subscribers. The app passes your random identifier to Apple at purchase, so a notification can be matched to it without your name. Access itself is decided on your phone by Apple's StoreKit.
- Technical protection. To block abuse, our server counts requests per day using a scrambled (hashed) form of the network address, not the address itself. The counters are deleted within a day.
We do not use advertising, trackers or third-party analytics, we do not sell data, and we do not follow you across other apps and sites.
Legal grounds (GDPR)
Statistics: your consent where the law requires it (the EU and EEA, the United Kingdom, Switzerland), which you can withdraw in Settings; elsewhere our legitimate interest in knowing how the app is used, with a switch to turn it off in Settings. Progress sync: performing the service you asked for (it runs in your iCloud, between you and Apple). Subscription counts: our legitimate interest in knowing how the app is used and paid for. Abuse protection: our legitimate interest in keeping the service safe. Feedback and waiting list: your consent.
Where data is stored, and who processes it
On servers of Cloudflare, Inc. that act as our processor. Our database is created with the EU jurisdiction, so it runs and stores data in the European Union. Cloudflare's worldwide network may touch requests on their way; Cloudflare uses standard contractual clauses and the EU-US Data Privacy Framework for transfers outside the EU. Apple processes purchases and runs iCloud: it stores your encrypted progress and a copy of the random identifier in your own iCloud, so they survive a reinstall and appear on your other devices. We do not give your data to anyone else.
How long we keep it
Events: 400 days. A device record that has not been used for 730 days, and everything linked to it, is deleted automatically. Feedback and votes are deleted together with your device record. Waiting-list addresses: until the app is released plus 90 days, or earlier if you ask. Abuse counters: up to one day. Server backups of the database may hold deleted data for up to 30 days before they expire.
Your rights
You can, at any time, in Settings > Privacy and data:
- Export your data: a file with what the app keeps about you, including the copy on our server.
- Delete your data: this erases your progress, searches and reminders on the phone, in your iCloud and on your other devices, and the statistics we hold, and starts you with a new anonymous identifier. If the server cannot be reached at that moment, the app repeats the deletion automatically when you are online.
- Stop statistics: switch them off.
Under the GDPR you also have the right to access, correct, restrict, object to the processing of your data and to data portability. Write to support@movko.app; we answer within one month. You can complain to the data protection authority of your country (in Portugal: CNPD, www.cnpd.pt).
Children
The app is for adults. It is not directed to children under 16, and we do not knowingly collect their data. Some courses help parents talk to a kindergarten or school.
Language help, not advice
Phrases about offices, health, school, housing or other official matters are language help. They are not legal, medical or other professional advice and may become out of date. Check procedures with the official source.
Changes
If we change this policy in a way that matters to you, we will tell you in the app before it applies. The date above shows the latest version.
