Six levels: from zero to millions
This is how the numbers go in the app: listen, repeat, recall.
0-10
First ten
From zero to dez
1 = um
💡 The final -s in dois, três, seis and the -z in dez sound different depending on what follows: "DOYSH" on its own, but "doyz" in dois euros and "doyzh" in dois mil. The converter shows this in the respelling.
11-20
From 11 to 20
Irregular numbers - you just have to learn them
11 = onze · 12 = doze
💡 In Portugal they say dezasseis, dezassete, dezanove. The Brazilian dezesseis, dezessete, dezenove sound foreign here.
20-99
Tens
A ten, e, a unit
20 = vinte · 30 = trinta
💡 Between the tens and the units there's always an e: vinte e um, trinta e cinco, noventa e nove.
100+
Hundreds
cem, cento, duzentos...
100 = cem · 101 = cento e um
💡 Exactly 100 is cem, and after that cento: cento e um. Hundreds have a feminine form: duzentas pessoas, but duzentos euros.
1,000+
Thousands
mil without um
1 000 = mil · 1 001 = mil e um
💡 1000 is mil, not um mil: 2000 is dois mil. Between mil and the hundreds an e appears only when what follows is a round hundred or less than a hundred: mil e trinta, mil e quinhentos, but mil oitocentos e noventa e dois.
1M+
Millions
milhão and milhões
1 000 000 = um milhão · 1 001 000 = um milhão e mil
💡 One million is um milhão, two and more is dois milhões. A billion is mil milhões, while in Portugal bilião means 10^12 - an English trillion.
Frequently asked questions about numbers
Short and to the point.
How do you say 2026 in Portuguese?
dois mil e vinte e seis (doyzh meel ee veent ee saysh). After mil we put e when what follows is a round hundred or a number below a hundred: mil e trinta, mil e quinhentos, but mil oitocentos e noventa e dois.
Why is 100 cem but 101 cento e um?
Exactly 100 is cem; after that it is cento: cento e um. Hundreds have a feminine form: duzentas pessoas, but duzentos euros.
Are the numbers the same in Portugal and Brazil?
No. In Portugal they say dezasseis, dezassete, dezanove; the Brazilian dezesseis, dezessete, dezenove sound foreign there. And bilião in Portugal means 10^12, not the English billion.
