💡 Almost every public office in Spain needs an appointment (cita previa): through the office's website (sede electrónica), by phone or app; without one they rarely see you.
💡 When there are no free slots they say No hay citas disponibles; the clerk may advise checking in the morning or on Monday: new slots are released on certain days.
💡 Keep the appointment confirmation (justificante de la cita) with its number on your phone or printed; show it at the entrance with your passport.
💡 Being late may mean losing the appointment; if you are late, phone or apologise and ask if you can still go in.
💡 Large offices give a número de turno (queue number) at a machine; the screen shows the number and the window (ventanilla or mesa).
💡 Empadronamiento (padrón) is the register of residents of a municipality: you need ID, your passport and a rental contract or the owner's authorisation; the certificate (certificado) is needed for school, doctor and many services.
💡 The certificado de empadronamiento is usually valid three months; school, doctor, bank and immigration ask for it.
💡 When moving within a municipality you update your address in the padrón; moving to another city, you register at the new place and the old one is cancelled automatically.
💡 If there is no contract, the owner gives a written autorización with a copy of their ID, and you register with it.
💡 Everyone living at the address must be listed on the form; write each person's name and document clearly; children too.
💡 When something is missing they say Falta un documento; you can ask ¿Qué me falta? (what am I missing) and ask them to write it.
💡 The immigration office (Extranjería) and the police station issue residence permits and foreigner cards (TIE); fingerprints (huellas) often need a separate appointment.
💡 Fingerprints (toma de huellas) are taken at the police; from then the card (TIE) is made and collected later by another appointment; bring your passport, the appointment confirmation and the paid tasa.
💡 The state fee (tasa) for the foreigner's card is paid in advance with a special form at a bank or online; the receipt is brought to the appointment.
💡 Renewal (renovación) is applied for in advance: up to sixty days before expiry and up to ninety days after; delay may bring a fine.
💡 The status of the case (estado del expediente) can be checked online with the case number (número de expediente) and passport.
💡 A requerimiento is a request to complete documents; you answer within the stated period (plazo), otherwise the case may be closed.
💡 The card (TIE) is handed over in person: they check data and ask you to sign for it; check the name, date of birth and validity at once.
💡 Temporary protection (protección temporal) for Ukrainians in Spain is granted through the police or special centres; it gives the right to live, work and use healthcare.
💡 Protection allows you to work (trabajar), have a doctor (asistencia sanitaria) and study (estudiar); family members are included in the application, so mention children.
💡 For children you need a birth certificate (partida de nacimiento) and a passport or copy; documents may need to be translated and certified.
💡 With temporary protection you can work without a separate permit; show the card to the employer, who registers you with social security (alta en la Seguridad Social).
💡 Help for Ukrainians is given by the Red Cross (Cruz Roja), Cáritas and CEAR: housing, food, legal advice and Spanish classes.
💡 A change of address or phone must be reported to the immigration office so letters and summonses reach you; give it in person or through the website.
💡 The número de afiliación a la Seguridad Social (NSS) is needed for work and the doctor; it is issued at the Tesorería General with passport or foreigner's document.
💡 To get offers and help, register at the employment service (SEPE or the regional service) as a demandante de empleo; the card must be renewed regularly (renovar la demanda).
💡 The renewal of the card is renovación de la demanda: do it on the dates shown on the website or in the SMS; missing it may cancel registration.
💡 Unemployment benefit (prestación por desempleo, paro) depends on how long you worked and contributed; it is applied for at SEPE after dismissal, by appointment.
💡 Vida laboral is the record of your work in Spain; ordered online with Cl@ve or a certificado digital, or by request; needed for banks, rentals and new jobs.
💡 Cl@ve is the single digital key for public services; register in person with passport at a designated point, then use the app or code.
💡 For a foreigner the tax number (NIF) is the same as the NIE; the Policía Nacional issues it on application; without it an account, a job and a rental are hard.
💡 The income tax return (declaración de la renta) is filed in spring (until the end of June) online through Renta Web or with an adviser; some people with income below a limit need not file.
💡 The certificado de estar al corriente de las obligaciones tributarias confirms no debts to the tax office; requested for rentals, grants or public tenders.
💡 A change of address for tax purposes (domicilio fiscal) is reported with a special form; this usually happens together with the update of your registration.
💡 Letters from the Agencia Tributaria have a deadline (plazo); if you don't understand, come to an appointment with the letter and ask what is required of you.
